Intent

At Yorkswood Primary School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, ideas and emotions. As their journey continues, they will progress in their use and control of different mediums,  as well as being able to select their own mediums based on their intentions for what they are communicating.

As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. This knowledge can then be applied in appreciating and critiquing a range of artists. This awareness naturally expands their interest in the culture of others as well as understanding historically how art and design reflects and contributes to their own culture.
