Phonics

We use the Read Write Inc scheme to support our phonics teaching throughout school. Children begin the scheme in nursery so by Year One are already very familiar with Read, Write, Inc. but the video at the bottom of the page will give a brief introduction to phonics and the Read Write Inc scheme if you are not already familiar with this.

In Year One we have daily phonics lessons that last for about 15 to 20 minutes in the morning. This is catered to each child's current phonic knowledge. By the end of reception children will have already learnt a large range of graphemes (ways of spelling sounds) that support them with their reading and writing. In Year One we expand on this by teaching them alternative sounds along with consolidation of what they have learnt. The children apply their phonic knowledge by reading a range of real and alien words, along with using our 'Fred Fingers' to help us with our spelling and dictation of sentences.

We assess the children every half term to track their progress and to prepare them for the phonics screening check at the end of Year One.

Here is the speed sound chart we use in phonics lessons and when we are writing. Practise these sounds at home and try to find words which contain each of these sounds.
