Guided Reading
In Year 4, we use 'VIPERS' to teach the various skills involved in reading. Each reading lesson has a focus on one of the following skills: vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval or summarising. We enjoy reading for pleasure and discuss books we read with our class. Children are encouraged to share their views and opinions on the texts we read. We ensure that children have access to a wide range of reading materials, different types of books and the chance to discuss them.
Home reading
Reading is an essential life skill and we find that those children who read aloud regularly are able to access and get the most out of the school curriculum. To help support this, we ask for children to read at home at least three times per week and to have this signed for in their home reading diary. The more home reading that is done, the better chance there is to win the end of term home reading prize. Every time a child reads at home, they get a star to fill on a book mark. The children have their bookmarks displayed in their classrooms. Each term, a winner is selected from all the completed bookmarks and this is a very exciting time.
