Reading & Phonics
We use the Read Write Inc scheme to support our phonics teaching throughout school. The video at the bottom of the page will give a brief introduction to phonics and the Read Write Inc scheme if you are not already familiar with this. In Early Years, phonics are introduced from the start and are part of our daily curriculum. We use a large range of resources, activities and games to teach, practise and embed children’s phonic knowledge. In Nursery, pupils will start with rhythm and rhyme. In Reception, pupils begin to link their letters and sounds and start to write and read words, starting with simple words, for example big, cat, dog. By the end of reception children will have learnt a large range of graphemes (ways of spellings sounds) that will help them in reading and writing.
To support phonics at home you can purchase a RWI Parent kit by following the link https://www.amazon.co.uk/Read-Write-Inc-Reading-blending/dp/0192748521/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=rwi+parent+kit&qid=1590139511&sr=8-1.
During the Reception year your child will read individually with an adult at least once a week. They will bring home both a school reading book and a library book. As a parent, you can support this development by taking every opportunity to share books with your child. This may be helping them with a school reading books, sharing a well-loved story together or browsing the shelves in your local library for something new and exciting to read.
We use Read Write Inc Books for home reading and children also choose a library book to share with an adult at home.
