Yorkswood Geography Intent

At Yorkswood Primary School we teach our Geography through themed topics.

In Early Years, we learn about our local area around school. In Key Stage 1, we look at our local area and develop knowledge about the United Kingdom and the world. We will begin using maps to record routes and then locate human and physical features. The children begin to understand basic subject-specific vocabulary relating to human and physical geography and begin to use geographical skills, including first-hand observation, to enhance their locational awareness.

In Key Stage 2, pupils should extend their knowledge and understanding and learn more about Europe and North and South America. This will include the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features. They should develop their use of geographical knowledge, understanding and skills to enhance their locational and place knowledge.

It is key that geography skills are taught across the curriculum, revisiting and building on what is taught in previous lessons.
